on friday i went to "devotee city" as volunteer for the "feeding program". a place where the supposed devotees of Señor Santo Niño who hail from different provinces (mindanao, bohol, some parts in luzon) were to be welcomed and housed in container vans in the devotee city as these people dont have any place to stay in cebu. im not sure but i dont think that those people, with ids hanging from their necks, were real devotees. heard a rumor that they were actually the homeless people of cebu city and it's neighboring provinces. how ruthless politics can be. how disheartening. the city cleared out the homeless, out of place people and paved the way for the tourists coming in to see the Sinulog. of course the city wants to project a positive impact on its foreign visitors but when i think about how the people behind the plan went in front of the media and covered the truth and the real intent of putting up a "tent city", a maddening thought, makes me sick to my stomach. i went around for a while in the made up little city and saw before my eyes harsh realities faced by the majority of the people in this hungry nation. it's sad.
since my early years of education, ive only learned of humans living in one world, this planet, earth. well of course. i grew in age and learned new things as people never stop learning and discovered along the way the notion of a third world. i've not heard of a second world though, is there a second world? i learned too that i belong to this third world. hmmm.. i wonder what makes for a third world, a second world, or a first world. i wonder if a fourth or fifth or sixth world is in the making. anyway, so i have this dream. i dream of a society that is free from political, social, economic, religious, cultural (and in all aspects) divisions. i dream of a communal society of people living towards a common purpose. the purpose is to create one world. of course im being too idealistic. well i can dream cant i? but gotta work on it soon... i may be one person but at least im doing what i can. the best way is probably to infect the heart aflaming for social change to as many people as possible hehe
im not selfish. i have to help myself before i start helping others. well you can't give what you dont have. im tired of seeing the same things over and over. each 'new' day is a flawless reproduction of the day before.
all hyped up...the best words to describe what used to be a genuine exhibition of faith and religious fervor each year in the month of january.
